The designer
Craft, heritage
and a global voice.
One of the most acclaimed New York-based designers, Bibhu Mohapatra brings his Indian heritage to elegant womenswear defined by master embroidery, textiles and heritage handwork.
Born in Odisha, India, Bibhu moved to the United States for graduate school before studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he received the 1997 Critics’ Award for Best Evening Wear Designer. After Halston and nine years as design director of J. Mendel, he launched his eponymous New York label in 2008.
His designs have been worn by former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Priyanka Chopra, Lupita Nyong’o, Glenn Close and Hilary Swank, among many others.
Industry prestige
A finale
worth crossing
oceans for.
“When I think about my work, it always goes back to this idea of craft.”
Bibhu has twice been the honorary designer to close the grand finale of Lakmé Fashion Week in India — a recognition of his extraordinary craftsmanship and industry prestige.
He is an active presenter during New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. At Sydney Fashion Week by MCR 2027, that money-can’t-buy experience comes to Australian audiences for the first time, as his Australian debut at our founding festival.
